Understanding Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction procedure is the most common cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. Surprisingly, it is not just women who are having this done. The number of men who engage in male liposuction procedure has been steadily increasing. Although not usually intended as a weight-loss technique, liposuction procedure can be used to remove stubborn, diet resistant fatty deposits and help to sculpt the body into a slimmer profile.

This popular procedure does not necessarily have to be performed at a hospital or surgery center, as it can also be done at the doctor's office. Naturally there are pros and cons related to both locations. Normally, only a small volume procedure will be performed as an out patient basis due to the high cost of liposuction. If a larger volume of fat needs to be removed or if this is being done in conjunction with other procedures, then your doctor will speak with you about the options available to you and together you will make an informed decision.

Plastic surgeons or even dermatologists perform many of these liposuction procedures. Keep in mind that any licensed physician may perform the surgery, as no standardized training is required. As a result of this there will be differences in experience and training. You may want to consider asking the physician you have chosen how many times he or she has performed this type of surgery and whether or not they have had any specialized training in this field. Just because it is elective surgery does not mean that it is any less serious than any other type of invasive surgery.

There are risks after liposuction.  A previous liposuction operation runs the risk of becoming separated during pregnancy and increases the chance of restricting fetal growth. Before deciding to undergo an abdominoplasty or liposuction tummy tuck as a procedure to tighten the abdominal muscles, experts advise waiting until you are sure that you will no longer want to become pregnant.

As with many other procedures, liposuction procedure is not completely pain or discomfort free. Experiencing pain after surgery is common. There is also a possibility of drainage from the incisions after liposuction procedure, but these are normal, and if necessary your doctor may insert a drainage tube to avoid the build-up of fluid. By following your doctor's advice you will have a better chance of getting through it with as little discomfort as possible. Remember to ask your doctor any questions you may have prior to the procedure so that everything is understood. And try not to be too impatient while waiting to see the results, as liposuction recovery means different things to different people.
